Two Beaches, Two Completely Different Worlds
Understanding Nazaré starts with understanding the geography. The town sits at the bottom of a dramatic cliff face, and on either side of that cliff are two completely different surf environments:
Praia do Norte is the big-wave arena. Positioned to the north of the promontory, it is directly exposed to Atlantic swells that are dramatically amplified by a deep underwater canyon — the Nazaré Canyon — running 5,000 metres beneath the surface. The canyon funnels and focuses open-ocean swells into monstrous, fast-moving walls that break with terrifying power. This is not a place to learn to surf. It is a place to watch with your jaw on the floor from the clifftop at São Miguel Arcanjo lighthouse between October and March.
Praia de Nazaré — the main beach in front of the town — is the opposite. Sheltered by the headland, it receives smaller, mellower waves that are genuinely beginner-friendly. Sandy bottom, consistent push, manageable power. This is where surf schools operate, and where most visitors first stand up on a board. The juxtaposition is extraordinary: learn your first green wave 400 metres from where professionals ride 20-metre giants.
Learning to Surf in Nazaré: What to Expect
Nazaré's surf schools run a well-established beginner programme on the main beach. Lessons follow the standard Portuguese surf school format: 30 minutes of land instruction covering paddling technique, pop-up mechanics, and ocean safety, followed by 90 minutes of in-water coaching. Class sizes are typically 6–8 students per instructor, with all equipment provided.
The main beach works best in the summer and early autumn when Atlantic swells are moderate (0.5–1.5 metres). These conditions produce perfect learning waves: enough push to stand up and ride, not so much power that falls become dangerous. Water temperature is comfortable from June through October (18–22°C), making Nazaré one of the warmer surf spots on Portugal's Atlantic coast during peak season.
Intermediate surfers will find less here than at Peniche or Ericeira — Nazaré's sheltered main beach is definitively a beginner break, and the power of Praia do Norte puts it firmly out of range for anyone short of expert level. The honest recommendation for intermediates: stay a few nights, watch the big-wave action if it's in season, take a guiding session to explore nearby breaks, then consider basing yourself at Peniche (45 minutes north) or Ericeira for more technical progression.
Figueira da Foz: The Underrated Alternative
Forty-five kilometres north of Nazaré, Figueira da Foz is one of Portugal's oldest surf towns — locals have been surfing here since the 1960s, long before Peniche became famous. The town sits at the mouth of the Mondego River, and the beach break at Buarcos delivers punchy, hollow waves that attract a devoted local scene.
Figueira is worth considering for several reasons. It's less touristified than Nazaré — you're surfing with Portuguese locals, not predominantly with a European surf-tourist crowd. Prices are lower. And the waves at Buarcos have more character than Nazaré's sheltered main beach, making Figueira a better choice for surfers already past the beginner stage who want to explore central Portugal beyond Nazaré. Several Nazaré surf schools run guiding day-trips to Figueira when conditions align.
Big Wave Season: When to Watch (and When to Give the Ocean Respect)
The Nazaré Canyon amplifies swells between October and March. During this window:
- October–November: The season opens. First major swells arrive, crowds are manageable, and the town has a charged, anticipatory atmosphere. Good for combining beginner lessons on the main beach with clifftop big-wave watching.
- December–February: Peak big-wave season. Record-breaking swells occur most frequently during this period. The Nazaré Tow Surfing Challenge (a WSL Big Wave event) typically runs in this window when conditions hit. The main beach can get lumpy and difficult for beginners; schools adapt by timing lessons to calmer windows.
- March–May: Big wave season winds down. Nazaré's main beach comes back to life as a proper beginner zone. Spring swells are smaller and consistent — good quality learning conditions with lower prices.
- June–September: Peak season for surf lessons. The main beach is at its most reliable and beginner-friendly. No big-wave spectacle, but the water is warmest and schools are running at full capacity.
Pricing: What Surf Lessons Cost in Nazaré in 2026
Nazaré prices are broadly in line with other mid-tier Portuguese surf towns — slightly below Peniche and Ericeira, which benefit from premium surf tourism pricing:
- Group lesson (2 hours): €35–€50. Board, wetsuit, and instruction included.
- Private coaching (1.5–2 hours): €60–€80. Worth it in summer when group classes fill quickly.
- Multi-day surf course (5 lessons): €150–€250. Most schools offer structured progression packages.
- Big wave watching tour: €20–€40 per person. Several local operators run guided clifftop experiences at Praia do Norte with historical and wave-science context. Worth every euro.
Accommodation in Nazaré is reasonably priced — it's primarily a Portuguese domestic tourism destination rather than an international surf camp hub. Guesthouses in the old town start at €50–€80/night; summer rental apartments around €70–€120/night. A self-catered week combining surf lessons and big-wave watching is one of the best value surf experiences in Portugal.
